Protein is a macro nutrient ( macro nutrient is a nutrient required in large quantity) that is essential to the body.

Chemically protein is composed of Amino acids which is made up of Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen or Sulfur.

General Chemical Formula: RCH(NH2)COOH

C - Carbon

H - Hydrogen

N - Nitrogen

O - Oxygen

R - is a group varying in composition and structure.

              SOURCE OF PROTEIN

There are two sources of protein;

Animal protein are meat, egg, fish, milk, prawn, crab, lobster, mussel, oyster, scallop, clam.

Plant protein are beans, nuts ( lentils, almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, cashew nuts ), soyabeans.

  IMPORTANCE OF PROTEIN IN YOUR DIET

1. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, skin, hair, nail, blood and cartilage.

2. Protein builds and repairs tissues in the body.

3. Protein makes enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals.

4. Red blood cells contain protein element which carries oxygen and other nutrient throughout the body.

5. Protein compose of Amino acid which makes an alkaline in the body less alkaline.

    PLANT PROTEIN VS ANIMAL PROTEIN 

Animal proteins contain the highest amount of Amino acids but plant proteins contain less amount of Amino acids which means that animal protein is required in less amount to meet your body's requirement.

Andrea Giancolia a registered dietitian in California says "Plant base protein are far healthier than animal protein because pound for pound they pack more nutrients into fewer calories" Animal proteins completely lack fiber.
